"Safe, legal, and rare."

Bullshit. Safe, legal and rare. How about safe, legal and without apologizing or equivocating? It's none of your damned business if a woman has an abortion, not even if she's married to you, dating you, or your daughter. Especially if she's your wife, daughter, or girlfriend. If you gave a damn about her, you'd already know her opinions about ( Read more... )

control freaks, abortion, dishonest crap, dipshits

I think I always comment here with "thank you" in the text. the_xtina October 17 2007, 15:14:00 UTC
Thank you so much for this.  Abortion isn't fun and I'd rather reduce the need for it (yayfor proper sex ed, you right-wing fucks), but the "...and rare" part didn't seem to be about that, and I couldn't put my finger on it for the life of me.

Happy to oblige. After the monster MRA thread at Shakesville, I just don't feel I can tolerate any bullshit whatsoever, from guys who can demand 'civility' from women because they don't give a shit about womens' rights to lefties who use Ann Coulter as an excuse to air their hatred of women. Fuck them all, I say. I don't owe them anything.

Oh, special bonus prize to MRAssholes who say that men created everything and women just use it: Go read a fucking history book and discuss those maternal mortality rates. It's hard to invent something when you're dead.

Not to mention the ways in which women's contributions have been shoveled under men's (see Rosalind Franklin and Einstein's first wife, who did the math in his 1905 papers and gets none of the credit).

Totally agreed. Of course it would be good for abortion to be rare, because it would be great if unwanted pregnancies or pregnancies with complications were rare. But any politician who feels the need to add the "and rare" bit is just pandering to the anti-choice crowd.

If you want abortion to be rare, provide comprehensive sex education and free, easy access to birth control.

I vote for safe, legal, and rare, because abortion is outpatient surgery. While it's a fairly safe procedure, no surgery is without risks, and all of it taxes the system. It's ever so much easier, cheaper, safer, and more pleasant to prevent pregnancy (through easy access to contraception) than it is to terminate it, after all.

But if people use contraception that means they're----gasp----having sex! Women are having sex! The sluts must be punished!

You know, I can only manage so much sarcasm a day. I've over my allowance for the day.

I don't go around saying, "Let's make open-heart surgery rare!

Dude, I do. That's why I contribute to the American Heart Association - to promote good heart health in the hopes that fewer people will have to have things like open heart surgery.

It makes more sense in this discussion to say, "Let's make unwanted pregnancy rare!"

That, too (though some wanted pregnancies also end in termination, and it would be wonderful if there were fewer of those, too.)

But if we don't criticize women for having abortions, THE TERRORISTS HAVE WON!

Oh wait, wrong speech.

Seriously though, as the proud owner of a penis, I don't want women telling me what medical procedures I should or should not have on my bits. Its only logical to respect another gender's genital freedom.

You would think, wouldn't you? However, I have spent several days arguing with men who believe that women perform miracles in sperm-entrapment, who get pregnant for the lulz/risk/ gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia for the riches of child support, regularly beat and rape men despite being smaller, discriminate against men by doing their housework and childcare, and a host of other idiocies.

They don't believe a fucking word of that bullshit they've unleashed over there. Their misogyny is indefensible so they're doing what abusers/bullies do: they're projecting their indefensible behaviors, faults, and flaws onto their victims. It's that damned simple.

Fine.

But most people feel abortion is seriously icky and needs to be rarer, regardless of what they would think if they really thought about it.

"Safe, legal, and rare" was invented to elect reasonable politicans who want a society where everyone can participate. Forcing typical voters around the nation to accept your analysis will elect Bushites who want to see women and nonwhite people and eventually middle class white people put into servitude.

So don't make it too hard on the "safe, legal, and rare" people.

I don't WANT reasonable politicians.

Me neither. But there's a difference between what we want and what we can get.

silent but reasonable majority in this country riled up enough to want to vote

Politics is filled with smart raging egos eager to do that, too. None of them can figure how to get it done. That's why reasonable looks so good compared to the alternative.

"Indeed, it is all about power and control. The anti's ugly secret is that, in their heart of hearts they believe that being pregnant and having to bear and raise a child is "the wages of sin," and it just drives them wild that people (specifically women) are "escaping" their "just desserts." They know they can't get away with coming out and actually saying that the fetuses they are trying to protect are "God's judgment on you for being a whore," but some of them come so close you can see it hovering on their lips, since it is the next logical point in their stream of argument."

Get out of my mind! I've believed - no, I've known - that to be so all of my life. Well, all of my adult life, that is.
