Thanks for writing this! I've been sorting through the same thoughts and emotions with caring for Homer. "OH NO, we sat side by side in the same room while he watched youtube on his iPad and I checked Facebook on my phone. FOR AN HOUR. Woe is me, I should be better at this mom stuff, I should soak in every ounce of his sweetness all the time, because he is growing up at lightning speed and I don't want to regret having sat on the internet his whole childhood AAAAHHHH ( ... )

You wanna know what I have LEARNED? The more time you allow kids to sort of explore the world (safely), including their little corner of it, the sooner they figure out who they are and the more comfortable they are with it. It gives them time to be themselves and therefore it builds confidence. I see these moms chasing their kids around and guiding their every activity (park, then playgroup, then lunch at friends, then music class, then nap, then playdate at kid gym, etc.) and then the kids growing up looking over their shoulder wondering if they are doing "it" right. They don't know how to just be themselves. I know this is a strong statement but as someone who was hovered over (health reasons) and constantly asked "are you okay?", I still am trying to figure out who the heck I am and how to make my way in this world. It's scary. Some parents may do that out of love, but our kids are only with us for 1/5th of their life. It's our job to help them be okay with themselves ( ... )
