I find for those missing bits of canon that happened when you weren't reading, wiki can be very helpful to at least get the general overview. *shrug* the Marvel one is actually pretty darn comprehensive too IMO.

If it sounded like fan fiction was my main source for canon facts,details or overviews, I'm sorry. For that I use wiki's, fan sites, or ask someone who knows more than I do -- like you. ;)

But for getting the more subjective flavor and color of a character or event that I missed, fan fiction is a great resource. But, I wouldn't just take one story or even one author's version as gospel. I'd try to find a couple different fics by different authors that feature whatever I'm focusing on.
