EDIT: Forget it. I can't make this variable work in a way that truly reflects people's multiplicity of identities. So I will recommend it to be a qualitative study in the limitations discussion section and also recommend future studies to ask a question such as "how do you explain your identity to others" as a way to get at whether people are

Ok, someone on my FB list posted:

I think your best bet is M2F F2M and GNC with 2-3 categories beneath that. GNCA, GNCF, GNCO.

As part Native American, I can relate to the two spirit concept. That said, I only identify as a woman. Does that make me less a two spirit? No. Does that make me gender nonconformist? No, I don't think so. It's a spiritual thing, it doesn't necessarily require both outward expressions in any capacity.

For gender nonconformist, you could have GNCA be leaning towards or expressing as andro, GNCF could lean towards fem or expressing as woman, but variant. You could have GNCO to represent Other. Or GNCQ could even be tossed in there for people who identify as completely fluid.

Based on this idea, I could put:

crossdresser = GNC
drag queen/king = GNC
feminine male = GNC or GNCm
FTM = FTM
GNC/variant = GNC
genderqueer = GNC
masculine female/butch = GNCf
MTF = MTF
transgender = GNC or omit
transsexual = GNC or omit
two-spirit = omit
none of these apply = GNC
female = MTF
male = FTM
intersex = GNC

Will need to see if expanding to more than three categories is viable.

What if your initial categories are Binary and Non-binary? That could give you a decent sample size to start with that could be further broken down in subsequent questions. "Non-binary" would include some of the harder categorize answers. "Binary" would include the folks assigned male/female at birth who identify as male/female and present male/female. (I know the terminology is not good but it's late and I don't have the words.) Using the "Non-binary" category would allow someone with a more complex self identity to be included and not left out of the survey because they are a category of one

Oh bleurgh of bleurgh. If someone answers more than one category, I have to decide between binary and nonbinary. How to choose? I want to see what happens in both scenarios!
