Actually, plimsoles are a specific type of athletic footwear. I own a pair and use them for exercise. Interesting that that was the first word to come to mind for you.
Plimsolls were the slip on black jobbies we always wore in junior school for PE and you still see them around. Calling them that is probably a marker of generation. 'Tis mostly 'trainers' these days.
They were named for Samuel Plimsoll (he of 'line' fame on ships) who came up with them as a non slip deck shoe for sailors.

Do you say "jeans" or "dungarees" because that's largely generational too yet I hear it now and again still.
