the woody stem looks normal. One only uses the leaves anyway, so it should be fine. The plant also probably appreciates the wind stimulation. Basil gets weird when it's grown somewhere where the wind doesn't blow on it.
That sounds right. You want to pick the flowers off, or else the plant gets bitter. Besides, if you pick the flowers off, it will grow more leaves (which is what you want, anyway.
I had this amazing basil plant that turned into a 4' high bush when I lived in Savannah. The stem actually started to get woody from how thick it had gotten. I miss that garden.

I read somewhere that the stems turn woody when the plant is getting ready to flower.

My brother has had that kind of success growing basil. He got really pissed off at me when I killed the plant he gave me a few years ago.
