Zane walks into the other side of the infirmary and finds Zoe somewhat dwarfed by her bed, looking smaller and more vulnerable than he expected.

“How’s the foot?” he asks, and Zoe gives him a wan smile.

“Fine. They’re working on it. How’s my Dad?”

He can’t hold back his smile then. “Like Father, like Daughter. He said just about the same thing, then asked about you.”

Zoe smiles shyly. “Not surprised. Not all Carter traits are bad, I guess.”

“Yeah, speaking of that… Between coming up with the signal code and your perseverance with your ankle, you were pretty impressive in there.” She blushes, and looks away, unusual considering her more commonly confident behavior. She probably doesn’t get enough credit in this town, and he feels a bit bad about it. She deserves more, and maybe with a little recognition and opportunity she really could be something. He knows the feeling all too well.

“He’ll be fine though. Henry and Allison are pretty close to figuring out what frequency he’s phasing at, and he’s stable for now under the lights. Once they get that squared away, he’ll be back to bothering you before you know it.”

She looks down at her hands, face still lined with worry, and something in his chest tightens. He suddenly feels protective of her, small and vulnerable in the infirmary bed, hurt and worried about her father, even if he will be ok. It’s a feeling he’s not quite used to, except to when it comes to Jo. And it seems weird that he could feel the same about some kid, Carter's kid no less. When she composes herself and looks back up at him, something clicks, but he mentally files that away for dealing with later.

“Thanks, but it was just the right thing to do, you know? We couldn’t stay behind just because I was stupid and hurt my foot.”

He chuckles at that. Being the self-sacrificing hero must run dominant in the Carter genes. “Sounds again like someone else we all know. I think you may have more of that Carter attitude than you think.”

“I guess it’s not such a bad thing to have. “ She smiles at him, and he can’t help but smile back. “And I know dad, there are only a very few dates and numbers he actually remembers, but that’s one of them.”

“Somehow I don’t think he’ll ever forget that one, I’m pretty sure it’s too important to him.” She blushes and looks back down again, quiet.

“Yeah, I guess.” She looks back up at him finally. “How’s Jo? I haven’t seen her yet.”

“She’s good. Worried about the both of you. Coming up here soon to check on the both of you, so I thought I’d make it easier for her and stay in one place since we’re supposed to go to dinner. You know, when she says that Carter’s going to be the death of her, I don’t know which one she’s talking about lately,” he teases.

Zoe barks out a small laugh, and he feels better. “Yeah, well. Look at my dad. He probably will be the death of her somehow,” she says, rolling her eyes.

“True, but with that boyfriend of yours turning into the next Fargo, he’s giving your dad a run for his money.” He can’t keep the sour note out of his voice. That kid’s stupid curiosity could have gotten them all killed.

“Lucas is nothing like Fargo! He’s just… too curious for his own good. And he’s so smart that he doesn’t quite understand not to do things, that’s all. Besides, Fargo’s… Fargo. Ugh.” She glares at him with disgust, and he laughs.

“Well, with you to keep him in line, he could turn out ok. One Fargo’s more than enough for this town.”

“No kidding.” Her smile turns devious. “You would know about being kept in line.”

He swallows hard. Oh god, what did Jo tell her? “Hey now, wait a minute…”

Zoe’s expression changes to innocent, but the flash is still there in her eyes. “Oh don’t worry, I’m the only one who knows about Jo’s handcuff collection.”

He tries to put on his best poker face, but it’s probably not working. He opens his mouth, but doesn’t know what to say. He’s usually good at throwing something back, but she’s formidable. And although he’s not ashamed about it, he doesn’t want all the teenagers in Eureka to be giggling about his sexual exploits. They’re too young anyway.

Zoe looks just about ready to deliver another revelation when Jo walks in. Thank God.

She looks at the both of them and flashes him a look that means he’ll have to explain it later, but that gives him time.

He watches the lines of her body move as she comes around to the bed, reaching up to give him a soft kiss on the cheek before going to give Zoe a big hug.

As he watches the two girls talk start to talk animatedly about something, he moves quietly closer and rests his hand gently in its usual place on her hip just above her gun. He can feel her shift her weight into the touch and for the first time all day something uncurls and relaxes in his gut.

Zoe shoots him a look, and no doubt he probably looks like a goof, happy to just have his hands on Jo, to be next to her. Jo notices the exchange and turns her head to look at him.

“What?” She doesn’t look too upset yet.

“Oh, nothing,” he says, letting his thumb rub softly against her back. Jo gives him a stern look too, and he’ll be hearing about it later. Great. Two tough little women getting after him about something. Just what he needed.

He glances at Zoe again and finds that her smile is now soft and accepting, and maybe just then he’s built himself an ally in the younger Carter. He smiles back, and Jo and Zoe go back to their conversation.

For now, he’s content to half listen to them and go over the latest set of calculations on the new dev project in his head, but tonight... He tightens his grip on Jo’s waist and leans a little closer. Tonight will be for actions, not words.
