He finds Zoe and Lex sitting at Café Diem, and he slides into the booth next to Zoe.
“Hey Lex, Zo.” Jack knows the smile he flashes them doesn’t reach his eyes, but with everything going on right now, just being near Zoe makes him feel better.
Zoe touches his hand softly, and maybe she’s more perceptive than he gives her credit for. “Hey Dad, you have good timing. Aunt Lexi was just about to tell me about your adventure with the Big Wheel,” she tells him with a grin.
Just great, he thinks, rolling his eyes. “I was five, Lex. You were too little to remember that!”
“Yeah, Monkey, but you’ve never lived that one down. Going halfway down the ridge on that thing and the whole neighborhood searching for you for hours because you had gone out ‘adventuring’, scaring mom half to death. You were a monster sometimes.”
“Really?” Zoe interrupts them, and Jack doesn’t quite like the look on her face. He has a sinking feeling it could come back to bite him.
“Yes, really. Your father was making trouble long before you ever were, little one. When he’d tell me about the stunts you’d pull, I kept telling him it was all karma.” Lexi smiles happily. He swallows hard.
Zoe laughs, her face brightening, and it warms his heart in a way he'd never be able to describe. If his baby is happy, he's happy, no matter how bad he's had it.
Jack can’t keep the smile off his face at the sound of her laughter, reluctant as it is. “It wasn’t my fault everything was so boring around there. I had to do something to keep myself busy.”
“Nearly break multiple bones and have to have a search party sent out for you is a bit overkill for ‘keeping yourself busy’, but you’ve never done anything by halves, Jackie.”
“Awww Lex, it wasn’t that bad.”
“The way Mom tells it it was. You were too busy getting yourself into trouble as a child to notice what chaos you were causing around you over it.”
“I was five,” he says, exasperated.
Zoe snickers.
“You just started then, Monkey. It never ended after that,” Lexi tells him with a teasing smile.
Zoe looks over at Lexi, interest sparkling in her eyes. “Oh really? Do tell me more, Aunt Lexi.”
Jack buries his head in his hands. He’s never going to win with the two of them working together.
