stellaluna_ did the usual fixing. ♥ And she insisted I write a full scene when I told her I saw bits of the other side of a scene in
"Black Sweet Blood Mouthfuls" and then poof. There's a coclaim, right there in front of us.
He starts to say something else, but Stella doesn't hear what it is. Mac moves away from him a little, reaching out for his kit, and then she sees the blood running down Danny's hand and staining his shirt where he cradles it against his chest. His palm has been sliced across the middle, skin opened and laid bare.
She stares at it, and red spots start to swim in front of her eyes. Her heart is racing fast now, and she feels something twisting inside her, like something in her heart or mind is about to explode. It takes her a few seconds to realize that the broken sounds she hears are coming from her own throat.
"Stella?" Danny says, and gets to his feet. There's a worried frown on his face as he takes a step toward her. "Stella, are you -- "
Mac stands up, too, but before he can say anything she backs out of the room, walks away fast before she does anything else she'll regret. She gets a few feet down the hallway and then her head is spinning so bad that all she can do is press her forehead against the wall and breathe in shallow gasps.
Mac tenses, looking back and forth from the door to Danny's hand over and over. Every cell in his body reflexively screams to follow her, but he continues to tend to Danny. Both of them are hurt and in obvious need of his help, and he doesn't know who to fix first, who needs it the most. Logic and experience tell him to first treat the open wound, to get the immediate threat to life under control and then move on to anything else. Except the painful twisting in his chest pulls at him in ways that make him want to defy that logic.
"Mac. Go," Danny says, cradling his injured hand to his chest, other hand gripping the wrist tightly to slow the flow of blood.
"At least let me help you--"
"'m fine. Ok, not fine, but I'll be ok. Really. Go see what's wrong-- she's been sorta off a bit." Danny's expression is genuine, and he seems truly much more confused and worried about Stella's condition than his own. He looks like he should be ok for the moment now that Mac's given him a small towel from the kit to hold against the cut.
He forgets momentarily that nobody else knows-- hence why Danny's so confused. He cares about Stella too, and her running out like that looks like it concerns him almost as much as it does Mac.
Mac stalls, torn between the two of them. He wants to go tend to Stella, but still feels a sense of obligation to see to it that Danny really is ok.
"Go, Mac." Danny gestures with his head toward the door, and Mac doesn't have to be told twice. He nods in return, and practically runs from the room, stripping his gloves off and shoving them into his pockets on the way.

"Go, Mac," he urges him. He's banged up and feeling stupid, but pretty sure that he's in a lot less need of Mac's attention than Stella is right now. He can see it in Mac's eyes that he's torn up about what to do-- he honestly can't blame him either. Even he wants to drop everything and go after her too, except for his damn hand.
He watches Mac rush toward the door, careful not to disturb any of the evidence markers despite the sense of almost panic underlying his movements-- which Danny admires, because he's not so sure he could manage that if he were in Mac's position, but it *is* Mac after all. His hand throbs again in reminder, and he hisses in pain. Right. Need to get it wrapped up so he can go check on her. Between what Mac's brought him and some assorted odds and ends in his kit, he'll be able to cobble up a passable bandage until he gets it fixed up properly.
He's secretly a bit pleased that he gets this much concern and attention over a stupid cut on his hand, but part of him just figures it's not so much anything other than worry about contamination of the scene rather than his safety. Mac wouldn't worry, pay that much attention to him otherwise.
What scares him is Stella's sudden and strange reaction-- she's seemed off for a little while now, and the fear in her eyes as she ran away was just unsettling. She's important to him, family now too, and to see her feel that bad hurts him just as much as it does Mac, even if neither of them see it that way.
He doesn't know the reasons why, but if something having to do with cutting his hand-- the blood, the cut, whatever-- is the thing that set her off, it'll make him feel even worse about the whole thing than he does already. The last thing he wants to do is do anything that could upset her that much, even if it wasn't intentional. What puzzles him is that they work around this stuff all the time, and she's never been scared of blood and all the much more gruesome things that have even put him off his feed before. She's poked fun at him once or twice when she's been less fazed by something than he has, so it seems so odd all of a sudden for her to be so upset by it all. There's something he's missing, and he feels a bit left out and hurt that he's not in the know.
Another throb of his hand startles him from his thoughts again. *Fuck*, it hurts. He wants to curl his hand in reaction but that just hurts more. He goes back to wrapping it up, tighter this time, hoping that immobilizing it some might make it hurt less. The sooner he gets the damn thing wrapped up right, he can be right out there with them. Out there where he wants to be, where he belongs.
She hears the door open again behind her a moment later, but she doesn't open her eyes.
"Stella," Mac says. "Stella."
"Just a minute," she says.
"It's just a cut, Stella."
