They often refer to some form of what has been called "crip-spiration" when a person with a disability is used to show all those able-bodied what anyone can do if they really TRY ( Read more... )

I was on Facebook a while ago and never used it because of all the reposting of horrible things like this and other, more directly offensive things. I now have less than a dozen people friended and even one of those is trying to sell me dodgy nutritional supplements for "post-cancer fatigue". It just makes me never want to talk to anyone ever again.

Personally, I agree that bad attitudes worsen disability - other people's bad attitudes towards disabled people and fair access, that is!

I hope there'll be a movement towards 'Facebook Addicts Anonymous'. FB gets used for some terrible stuff.

I actually posted Stella Young's article about it on Facebook and a co-worker came up to me the other day to basically tell me how much it made her think. http://www.abc.net.au/rampup/articles/2012/07/02/3537035.htm

"But using these images as feel-good tools, as "inspiration", is based on an assumption that the people in them have terrible lives, and that it takes some extra kind of pluck or courage to live them.

For many of us, that is just not true."

I've heard it called inspiration porn, which seems about right to me. Also, there have been scientific studies on such things. Lots of prayer can improve a person's recovery -- perhaps because lots of people wishing someone well can actually make a difference. But your attitude, good or bad, makes no difference to recovery whatsoever. So if you want to gripe, it isn't going to shorten your life, and sometimes it's exactly what we need. So gripe, vent, and have the attitude you want to have. It will make no difference to how you feel physically and won't hamper recovery from an illness, no matter what "they" say.
