Anchoring layers? What? Help!

Hi there - I am new to LJ and to GIMP (just got it yesterday, in fact) and I am working my way through some LJ online tutorials. And yes, I am a bit rubbish with computers, so words of one syllable would probably be best - *grin

When you are using the move tool, make sure the layer you want to move is selected in the layers dialog box. Go to tool options and then make sure 'move the active layer' has the green dot next to it.

I did that, and the whole thing is moving again out of alignment, showing the grey checked layer underneath.

I make a rectangle, fill it in with colour, click move, then click on the rectangle to reposition it on the canvas but it won't highlight it - and when I drag, the whole picture moves.

Before i make the rectangle am I supposed to make a new layer?

You just want to move the rectangle right? What I would do is make a transparent layer and then make the rectangle on that layer. Then make sure in your layers dialog box you have the transparent layer selected.

It does that to me too- but when you move the whole thing, the cursor is usually different. If you just want to move one layer or shape, make sure the cursor is a + sign with arrows on top, maybe that's it :)
