honeybees

We had a great day at my Mom's house yesterday.:)  The kids played in the wading pool, and the adults lounged on the deck. We really enjoyed seeing the honeybees drink water from the pitcher fountain...

This is going to sound dumb...but I never really thought of bees as big drinkers.

You know, I didn't either, but my Mom and stepdad live near the airport in Eugene and there's not much water for miles right now. The farmer next door is growing clover for his sheep, and has some bee hives in the field, so these little guys started showing up at Mom's fountain for water.

We were sitting right there all afternoon and they never bothered us a bit, they just wanted the water. There would be as many as 10 at a time, hovering around the spout.:)

"Bees collect nectar, pollen and water each day to take back to the hive so that future generations can live. The raw nectar comes from flowers. They mix this with secretions from their glands, thereby transforming it and after it is deposited in the comb, it ripens into honey."
