Thank you very much for reading and the kind words. :) This does end up a sad, rather bitter situation - a real case of what might and could have been - where it's easy to think of the ifs, buts and maybes along the way with Mary and Richard's relationship. And there is certainly plenty of them, which is what makes it fascinating to write about!
