Thoughts being thinky.

First of all, a link to a funny list of Every Argument About Buffy on the Internet. An example:

Bangel Is A Child’s Delusion Of What Love Is
Spuffy Is Literally Assault
Okay But He Felt Really Bad About It And Didn’t Have A Soul

Second, I do hope you are following the rewatch we are doing at fantas_magoria - yesterday we ( Read more... )

The race thing is interesting. It hadn't struck me (coming from a very white background). The shooting script doesn't make any note of the parent's race, so FWIW it's probably not the original intent of the line as written, at least.

(I also just noticed that the shooting script describes Dru as "jamming on Spike's balls" in the scene where he kills the Annoying One. Americans.)

What the heck is that supposed to mean? Americans indeed - they don't speak my language, at least not all the time.

Twenty years in the Coventry area has made me very accustomed to a very wide variety of races and colours, much more so than we see in Sunnydale. Our East Coast is mostly white, though - all that barbaric invading Scandinavian influence perhaps. ;-)

Jamming = what jazz musicians do when they get together and improvise. Doesn't make a lot of sense in this context. I think what the writers meant was "Drusilla is enjoying Spike's audacity and daring."

I'd just like point out that Spike happily bit and sired the young POC woman in season 7 (even if she was just a 'one bite stand.')

I don't think we're meant to think there's a racial element at all to Spike not biting the guy in School Hard, firstly because as BGF says, the man's race isn't mentioned in the script, and second because I think the BtVS writers for the most part are running very scared about race issues. They don't want to deal with them, and don't really know how, so they avoid them. And so do the characters.

ETA: Also, as a Brit, the mention of veal always makes me think first about youth, not colour. In fact, until you mentioned it here, I hadn't made any connection at all between the 'veal' remark and the race of the person Spike didn't want to bite.

WHAAAAAAA how did I miss out on this rewatch? Ah well. Great points, very interesting points. There is a reason I collect Whedon Academic books because I love discussions like this, it just makes the show that much better.

Me too - I have a ridiculous number, even if I did get rid of the one that (academic!) declared Buffy and Angel were soul-mates.

One comment on "veal man." Veal is from calves, not adult cows. Perhaps I'm naive, but I thought he meant he preferred blood from young humans.
