Just in case you thought we'd made some sort of progress

An email from The Book People just turned up. The company sells mostly remaindered books and overstock, and is quite a good source for presents and such. Perhaps it's a good sign that these are in that category? I wish I could think so:

Ugh. I'd buy the boy's one for the girls just because.

OMG PWNIES!!11!!! *erm* sorry...
There was a brief, bright spot, I think it was back in the 80s, when publishers and all really tried to be non-sex-specific in toys and coloring books (e.g., showing girls on the packaging for wagons and toy tool sets, and boys on the kitchen sets.) Sadly, it was short-lived. The sexism in children's things seems far worse now than in the 70s. And I find that sad. Plus -- I would definitely give the "boy" sets to my nieces. *blam!* take that sexists!! (again...apologies)

Somehow all the good things we could see ahead when we were younger have disappeared and we are, in so many ways, back in 1950.

That made me think... You know about Mike the Knight: he has a sister, Evie, who's a witch (but the nice kind thereof). G couldn't care less about her, even though she's obviously been created to compensate for the masculine tone of the program. What G wants is to be a knight and go on adventures with friendly dragons. She will also put a nappy on Hamish (her toy panda. She did the nappy thing on her own yesterday while I was having a go at our lavender bush at the front. That was really cute. But G's impression of a dragon is equally cute).

Also, I wonder if that sexism is the reason why G refuses to touch the last sticker book my mother sent. It's about fairies, lol!

You've seen the 'Petit Ours Brun' books and so on at ours. While French grammar would make the bear a boy, the books sometimes dress him as a boy or as a girl, though always in trousers, of course (that links to your other post about people's attitudes towards the gay).
