Oh, this was so good! I was as flabberghasted as Mal when I realized what Inara was thinking - oy!! Really enjoying these moments of discovery for each of them, learning the little bits and pieces of each other. I like your take on Mal and his reasons for behaving the way he does towards her. Great stuff!

and now, finally, I *must* away to bed! I'm not even looking for more tonight, just in case I find it! Good night! :oD (be back tomorrow *G*)

Oy, indeed! I'm glad you like the stories - I'm enjoying writing them. Going from two strangers who think they can't stand each other to two people desperately in love who...think they can't stand each other. And now, fun with Jayne!

I always interpreted the order of the flashbacks in OoG to indicate the order the crew arrived on Serenity, so, I agree with you that Jayne came on board after Inara. Also, in Serenity, after they leave Badger's, Jayne says something like "I didn't sign on to this crew for the scenery" which feels like he hasn't been on long.

I never really gave much thought to how Jayne's new presence would affect the crew. Mal's reaction here seems appropriate. He's such a clever guy!

And the M/I scene, wonderful miscommunication between these two.

Let me make sure I have the truth of this. My wardrobe does not suit you. My appearance and my manner offend you. You find fault in my work and everything else about me, even the way I smell.

This puts me in mind of Mr. Darcy's proposal to Lizzy. Are you a P&P fan?

I haven't read Pride and Prejudice in a long, long time - now I want to get my hands on a copy ASAP. So I didn't write that part, at least not consciously, to refer to P&P. Inara gets very formal and even academic in her speech at times - e.g., when she's telling Atherton off at the end of Shindig - and I thought it would be interesting to have her and Mal go in 2 different directions, emotionally.

Thanks!

I loved this!! Especially this part-

A wry smile at his back. "You were the only one who didn't suggest an arrangement other than a financial lease."

Can't wait to read more!

Thanks! I always thought that the "you want me" line had to have carried multiple meanings for Inara. She certainly didn't mean just "on your ship." It's a great, great moment between the 2 of them - I love how Nathan handled it, just going very still and wary, very alert for what might be coming next.

Okay, last comment spam, I promise. :P

I really, really liked this, the misunderstanding between the two of the them, and I loved Inara's reason for choosing Serenity. It's something I've always wondered about, so I'm glad you filled in this blank (and so well, too!) for me.

Thanks for sharing this, I really enjoyed it. =)

Hehe, now I'm spamming you with the replies! I figured Mal would see to making sure everyone is safe while he figures out what kind of thug Jayne is. Plus, I can't help but love a scene where Mal is simultaneously yelling at Inara (about how gorgeous and desireable she is, no less) and trying to be her knight in dented armor.
