When I first saw the film I honestly couldn't understand how Ennis was able to go on, in a lot of ways I still don't. Except for the dreams. The film doesn't give us that but the novella does. It is the dreams and enable Ennis to continue. And there is just something so poignant about Ennis saying hello to Jack via the shirts. He couldn't allow himself to keep Jack with him and make him part of his day to day life but he does with the shirts, post card, and his dream life.
