So, whenever a war-related holiday, of which the US has several, comes around, family members of mine begin making Facebook posts about honoring soldiers for fighting for our freedom. When it comes to the justifications behind war there is an important distinction to draw between "Freedom" and "Security". Fighting for our freedoms is a bullshit slogan that the right uses to shied themselves against criticism for how badly they fucked things up in the middle east since 9/11. It would have been far more honest, though less sexy, to say that we were fighting for our security. Of course in hindsight notions of honesty in the lead-up to war are a sad joke.

In a concrete sense, probably the Civil War.

In a more abstract sense? I'm thinking World War 2 might have had long term consequences for our freedom had the Axis won, although that's hard to prove.
