Well folks, this is my last post here on
giles_fic_recs. I hope it's been as much fun for you to read the fics as it's been for me to rec them. Thanks to
agilesreader for starting the comm,
antennapedia for keeping it going, and all the other reccers, creators, and readers of Gilesy goodness.
What follows is a selection of my favourite Giles-related fics (all of which have been recced here in the past). Narrowing it down was really, really tough, yet somehow, there's still a lot of recs under the cut. Hopefully, that means there'll be something for everyone. Enjoy!
Fun (and some smut, which is also fun!):
The one that started it all, for me:
uberaeryn's
Raining On Sunday. Giles/Buffy, FRAO/NC-17, post-Chosen. It's funny, it's sexy, and it's right.
Sleep While I Drive, a series by
mireille719. Giles/Xander, FRT/PG-13 so far. In these stories, Xander's summer vacation road trip includes Giles. I nearly leap out of my chair with squee every time an update appears -- that's part of the fun.
Also by Mir,
Best. Game. Ever. Giles/Wesley/Xander, Xander's POV, FRAO/NC-17, end of summer after S4/S1. Giles, Wes, and Xander have a few drinks and play truth or dare. Hilarity ensues. :)
The
Practically Perfect series, by Pythia (
mythichistorian). Giles/Buffy, FRC/G, crossover. If you want something to gladden your heart, this series will do it. You might never look at a certain movie the same way again.
Twist in My Sobriety, by
sparklebutch. Giles/Ethan, FRM/R, an alternative take on A New Man. Short and funny and very much them.
Smut:
Into the Dark Age, a series by
sadbhyl, Giles/Ethan/Buffy, FRAO/NC-17, pre-series (kind of) AU. Hot. Very hot. And brilliant. Get the bucket of ice water ready. Did I mention it's hot?
Favours, a four-parter by
versaphile. Giles/Wes/Angel, FRAO/NC-17 (BDSM), end of summer post-S4/S1. Artful kink with delicious imagery and sense-evocation. The deeper you get into this fic, the more it reveals its secrets.
Halloween, by
gilesbabe. Giles/Buffy, FRAO/NC-17, S4. Mmm, disguises.
Brass, by te (
thete1). Oh, mercy. Dirty!HOT pre-series Giles/Ethan/Spike fic. FRAO/NC-17, of course.
Long, and worth it:
It's probably about to get majorly Jossed by the S8 comics, but I thoroughly enjoyed the
Virtual Lunatics' Season 8. Ensemble including Our Sometimes-Tweedy Bit of All Right, up to FRAO/NC-17.
maddogs991 wrote 100 connected drabbles under the title
New Sun Rising. Giles/Dawn (yes, really), FRM/R to FRAO/NC-17 at the end. It's not an easy path for them, unsurprisingly -- there are roadblocks and complications. But there is also love. And it works.
Voices In the Night series by
twilightofmagic. Giles/Wesley. FRAO/NC-17, post-NFA (and all that entails). It had me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment. Lush with detail. Creepy, hot, haunting, gorgeous, and with a believable, strong OC.
The series
In Another Life, by Trekker. Giles/Ethan, AU. The red asterisks beside some of the titles mark the smutty FRAO/NC-17 parts; otherwise, most of it is G or PG. How might things have turned out had Giles and Ethan never parted company in the Ripper days, and eventually, arrived in Sunnydale together?
Castaways:
Then Came the Dawn, by Scarlet. Giles/Andrew. FRAO/NC-17, character death and non-con. This fic repeatedly broke my heart and churned my gut. Bleak, disturbing (at some points, shocking), graphic -- and yet... amazing.
Lost, by Gail Christison. Giles/Buffy, FRT/PG-13. This fic's landscape is so vivid, you might find yourself mapping it out in your head.
Isolated Elements by
elementalv, crossover with CSI, Giles/Gil, FRAO/NC-17, post-The Gift. Another casting away -- well, spiriting away, more like. Very neat.
Dark:
Inked Retribution by Elisabeth (
dragonydreams). Giles and Angelus (note the lack of slash), R/FRM, post-Passion. Exactly what the title says. Nasty, but fitting.
Record, by te (
thete1). Giles/Ethan, FRAO/NC-17. After the events of The Dark Age, Giles sets down the story of the Ripper days. Astounding prose, brilliant story.
Nifty:
Hold You Close Like We Both Died by
vylit. Giles/Faith, Giles/Ethan, FRM/R, post-Chosen. Faith makes for an unusual matchmaker, and certainly goes about it in her own inimitable fashion.
Dancing in the Park, by
twilightofmagic. Giles/Ethan pre-series, FRAO/NC-17. Stunning, cinematic, dense with imagery.
Five Black and Gold Rings, by
beccaelizabeth. Some Giles/Ethan and some gen, FRT/PG-13, various settings/times. Five ways Giles acquired the ring he wears on his little finger. A wonderful set of possibilities.
A Game of Chess by
kindkit, Giles/Ethan, FRM/R, post-Chosen. They're together again. Sort of.
When They Take You In, by
kivrin. Giles gen, pre-series, FRT/PG-13. What happened after everything fell apart.
The Comfort of Old and New, by
violet_quill, HP/BtVS/Good Omens crossover, Giles/Aziraphale & Giles/Remus, set between Bargaining 1 and Flooded, FRM/R. A three-way crossover that works. Lovely fic.
Fics that will probably haunt me forever, and I won't complain:
Act of Nature by
wesleysgirl and
janedavitt. Giles/Xander, FRAO/NC-17, post-Chosen, character death. Anything by these two is guaranteed to be good reading, and this series (and its sequel,
One Year On) in particular. An absolutely gorgeous love story.
The Weary World Rejoicing and its sequel,
Out of This Stony Rubbish by
annakovsky. Ensemble, up to FRAO/NC-17, post-apocalypse fic (character deaths). Epic, heartbreaking, hope restoring. It brought me to my knees. I don't like post-apocalypse fic, in fact I try to avoid it -- but this is fantastic.
The Waking by Mad Poetess (
mpoetess), FRT/PG-13. I can't tell you anything about it without spoiling you, but if I had to choose one fic to take with me to a deserted island, this would be it. It's excellent.
That's it from this gal. *hugs and points to icon* 'Nuff said.
