As one of the people who recommended this book (it was my favourite book of last year) I'm really sorry you didn't like it that much :-( That is a shame.
This is why I hate recommending books as I foolishly feel somewhat 'guilty' if the person I've rec'd it to doesn't like it. And I know that is daft, as it's not as though I'm holding a gun to anyone's head or forcing them to go out and buy the book; it's your choice. But even so. It's just one of those 'things'.
Boy, aren't we a pair. I feel somewhat 'guilty' for not caring for the book! Which I know is just as silly as you feeling guilty because of that! Plus, I'm sure there are plenty of books that I've liked that you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pool (mostly, I know, horror.) and you've recced plenty of books that I've really liked. 😊
I liked the book very much, but I do agree with you about the magical aspects.
The disappearing & reappearing bookshop required ‘suspension of disbelief’ even with the background explanation given, but it was necessary to the plot so I allowed myself to buy into it.
Madam Bowden was necessary to the plot, too, but she needed more explanation.
Martha’s tattoo, though, was hard for me to swallow since I could never picture how there was enough space for pages and pages of writing.
Still, as I said, I liked the book enough to overlook its shortcomings.
The premise was great, just didn't deliver. And I think even magic has to have a certain explanation when set in the "real" world. Not like the dragons of Game of Thrones, that are set in another reality. Dragons here would need a bit of explaining. I felt the book didn't do that, or not very well.

I did feel that the book held a lot of promise, but, unfortunately, didn't deliver in my estimate. Mostly, I think i liked Opaline's story.
