How the hell can s/he know what is the extent of his/her grasp without overreaching to find out? Sometimes reaching further yields surprisingly successful results, and you learn. Other times, reaching yields failure, and you learn.

...well and other times you reach and your arm is chopped off. when this happens you learn to withdraw that arm so you won't lose it.
