Heh, I liked this before, and the additional comments around the mask work well--especially Orochimaru's reflections on it. Pretty much everything I've seen discussing the mask (though they were all for Kakashi) has never looked at it as a potential for weakness.
I think I've seen one other fic that regarded the mask as a weakness, though like you it was found in a fic about Kakashi, where Kakashi didn't really have any idea how to disguise how he felt. This story is alright, and for once I think I didn't make Orochimaru too sympathetic as I'm prone to do, because even though he's like twenty-eight or something here and not really all that evil yet, I was trying to show a bit that he isn't really all that good a person.
this was awesome. I rarely see any fics with the White Fang being the main character. I say this alot but I have to say it again: I love your Orochimaru. I always love how human he is, but also how he still retains that distinct distance towards others that is characteristic of geniuses. I always love your "moment in time" fics.
It is rare, but for good reason. We know little to nothing about the White Fang, so it's hard to characterize him. Seeing how stuck up and rule bound Kakashi acted when young, I decided that he was probably acting opposite as his father did in order to distance himself from the White Fang's legacy, thus the personality I created was born.
What always struck me about Orochimaru is how quiet he was as a child. He got snarky and kind of creepy somewhere in his teens, but at the same time he's still one of the sannin, so that could just be him, interacting distantly and awkwardly because that's the only way he knows how. I think I might actually continue this, because my Orochimaru genuinely likes my Sakumo, if only because Sakumo doesn't have those overly emotional flashes of temper that Orochimaru regards with disdain. Orochimaru just has too many issues to really know when he actually likes people instead of just finding them useful.
