[The dead Zero is being moved by the medical team to proper containment, the Force Metal -- she'll have to ask X more about that later -- is in a sample tube for her to look at later, and as enlightening (or maybe not enlightening, but at least interesting) as it's been spending the past while in a room full of X's and Zeros, trying to figure out ( Read more... )

[Alia isn't the first person to have to get out of that room with it's too familiar corpse, the confusion and stress, and the creeping doubts about himself and everything happening. Down the hall, X leaned against the transparent window panel that looked out on the ocean. Aside from lights reflecting from the city on the water, it was dark out there.

X had needed to get out and try to clear his head. It was just too much to deal with at the moment. He had his eyes closed and was breathing in and out, just trying to clear his thoughts and push it all aside so that it wouldn't overwhelm him. He couldn't quite manage it.

There was a Zero in there who was dead. Without his core, he couldn't come back. Was he from the past? From the future? X found it didn't matter. He couldn't dismiss the body as a copy. The way he'd felt when he'd walked in and seen him there, dead... He'd known. Even without any logic or proof behind it, his... his heart had knownThe only think keeping him from breaking at that moment was that Zero was ( ... )

[She's not really expecting anyone to be out there, and Alia's got a lot on her mind, so it's only by a stroke of luck that she manages to not walk straight into X, and instead catches herself when she's barely a foot away.]

Oh -- I'm sorry, X, I didn't mean to --

I didn't realize you were already out here.

[X is snapped out of his thoughts at Alia's voice. Startled, he looks up and then straightens up himself.]

Alia- No, no, it's okay.

I was just-- I needed a moment.

[somewhere between dry and sympathetic] I think I can understand that.

[And after a pause, she realizes she's probably still standing a little close, and hastily takes a step back, turning to look out the window herself.]

I wanted to know if you were holding up alright anyway, so I guess it works out, right?

[Zero follows, after it's clear there's nothing else for him to do there, and although he recognizes that she probably needs her space, he needs to get a couple of things resolved too. But he can give her at least a few minutes, distracting himself by talking to some shaky support staff that everything's going to be fine, we'll get to the bottom of this, rest assured that there will be no break in continuity of management... while attempting his best to ignore the uncertain and doubtful looks being thrown at him.

After all, he shares their doubt and uncertainty now.

He catches up to Alia then, and approaches her with an apologetic sort of look.]

Not a good time, but we need to talk.

We're Hunters. I think we're used to everything coming at a bad time. [She half-smiles. It's a weak attempt at humor, but at least it's enough to prove that she's not going to go to pieces over this.]

But yes, you're right. We do need to talk.

You're probably going to get a ton of scan requests, so how do you want to handle this? I can't really get you any support.

[He's not one to waste time, especially in a situation like this. But he also shakes his head, realizing what he's about to drop on her. It's a massive, difficult burden.]

I'm compromised, and so's everyone else in ranking position, so for right now I'm willing to concede command authority. Are you willing to accept it? If there was anyone else I thought I could trust...

[he moves closer, resting a hand on Alia's shoulder, a sad smile.] If it's too much, tell me right now and I'll try and find someone else, but I really can't imagine anyone better than you.

[She frowns -- the scan requests were expected; even if nobody asked her directly she'd still be wanting to run them. She trusts X and Zero. What she doesn't trust is what anyone else might've done to them, and with the strange time differences, and the fact that even she and Axl are off from each other despite neither of them having a double (yet -- no, don't think about that), it's hard to trust anything.

The only thing they've got to trust at the moment is the knowledge that none of them would ever willingly bring harm on the others.

But taking command -- that, she wasn't expecting, even if it makes perfect sense once it's out of his mouth. They have no choice but to assume the worst right now, and with Zero and X both out of the running, then who else is there? (Well, there's Axl. ....yeah, no.)

She bites her lip. It's the reasonable choice, and she knows it. She may not be cleared for fieldwork, but she's still a Hunter. If this is what it takes to clear this up, it's her duty, and she's okay with that. But --]I'm willing to ( ... )
