He didn't want to be doing this, but there was nothing about this situation that Edmund really had a choice in. There was nothing he could do to make things better, to take away Susan's tears, to make his own heart stop hurting, to bring his brother back. Everything was firmly out of his control, except this. He could at least make the walk to Jill's hut and break the news to her himself. It wasn't any sort of comfort at all. In fact Edmund guessed that this would hurt just as badly as telling Susan. But he'd felt more than a little lost since finding Peter's empty bed that morning, lost and numb and it felt better to put one foot in front of the other and know where he was going, what he had to do.
It wasn't that far of a walk from Susan's to Jill's, but Honour stayed with him every step of the way. Only when Edmund needed just two steps to reach her door did the direwolf slink off, out of sight but not far. It felt good to know that something was looking out for him. Edmund raised a fist and knocked on the door. "Jill? You there? Awake?"
