i always s's, but i seem to recall that neither is actually wrong. i can read either quite happily (and having read a lot of fic featuring sirius, remus and james, i can say that with some certainty.)
though a lot of people don't use it, it is grammatically correct to write it james's. the only time you're not supposed to put the second s on is if it's a possessive plural, as in "jeremy likes to make fun of the james' hair." meaning, he makes fun of an entire family with the last name of james.

I can never s's for some reason. Maybe it's my inherent laziness? Maybe it's because I'm American? I just don't know.
