Very nice! Refugees in the truest sense of the word... and I like the voice of the child telling the story.

The thing about historical fiction is that one must research. And while family memories are wonderful, they are often not quite connected to reality.

Thus Mussolini was not coming to power in 1938. He came to power in, I believe 1922. In 1938 he was actually starting to lose his power to Hitler.

Nor would they have likely taken a train all the way from Italy to Sweden. It would have required a precarious trip thousands of K out of their way and through Nazi/Soviet controlled areas...as opposed to taking a train through what was then still somewhat free Europe and then taking a boat to Sweden.

Shoah is a very very touchy subject in this day where revisionists are saying it never happened. So care must be taken.

I did check with my mom, and my year is about right. I think they left because my father's uncle had passed away and there was a Jewish quota in US at that time, so they had "enough room" for them (can you even imagine such a thing?).

I will change the location though, I found out it was from Milan to France. Not Sweden.
I will edit when I get a chance. Thanks for the comment.

I hope you do. The role of Italy in the Holocaust is...interesting. Unlike many Axis countries, the Italians were not really that antisemitic. Alas they got caught up in, either because of the herd mentality or because the country was being filled with Nazi soldiers and they were afraid to say anything.

As to the Jewish quota, there is no way of knowing how many Jews died in the camps because they were refused amnesty in Allied countries.

Yes, I called my mom, and my year is right, but my location is incorrect - it was Milan to France on the train. I was in a rush and I thought I spelled Sweden incorrectly - I will edit it shortly. Thanks!
