The part about fixing it from the backups of a different system was awesome. After I read the teaser I was braced for a multi-day tale of woe, despair, and lost income. I've recommended Bacula for this sort of thing in the past. :D
Only the client, which works fine. I would very much resist using a complicated command-line-and-config-file thing like the Bacula director and storage daemons on Windows.
For a small group or just a few workstations, an rsync/rdiff script should be all you really need. Bacula is complicated and there is definitely a cost/benefit hump to get over before you want to use it. I manage 35 servers and 15 workstations, so it's worth it. But at home, Jayme and I just use an external USB drive and rsync about once a week.
