Some meta and notes on "Hourglass"

or, why the vid was dedicated to cathexys.

This was supposed to be a really quick post on my basic reasons for wanting to make this vid, but then it stopped being brief and got long, and then it got longer, because apparently I find nothing so fascinating as myself, so, you know what? Don't even read it, seriously. Go away.

My vanity, let me show you it )

Yay for meta vids!

I particularly like this vid because it works on both levels--you can just enjoy it as a multi-vid about time loop eps, or you can go all meta. Lots of meta vids only work the second way, so, cool.

I for one would have loved to see this at the Fuck You challenge (if this is the vid you were mentioning), but I'm glad we got it early, too. :D

I wondered about the creators "just" using the same clips twice when I rewatched Mystery Spot at the gym yesterday (inspired by your vid, natch). I kept trying to ID if the Pig in a Poke shots were repeated footage or not. But I couldn't concentrate enough through my belabored breathing. :D I don't envy you the task!

Yeah, this was the vid I was considering. Ultimately I released it online, because ... well, I'm desperately insecure and I didn't want it to be compared to all the other amazing vids that were going to come out of VVC.

Yes, that's right. I wear my neuroses on my sleeve.

I don't remember what the deal was with Pig in a Poke, but I do know I was incredibly frustrated that an SG-1 clip of Daniel tripping and falling was played twice, and even the reaction shots were almost identical. I wanted to use it so badly.

This is fascinating! One of the things I love about genre shows in general is that so many of them use the same episode concepts (and actors!) over and over - it's really neat to think of fandom as an endless series of responses and repetitions from the source texts on down, with time loop episodes being a particularly good example of that, since they're both externally repetitive (in the sense that it's genre trope) and internally repetitive. And then there's fanfic of time loop episodes, which I guess must be the pinnacle of the artistry of repetition.

Sorry, blithering. But kudos for making a vid that's so cool on a meta level as well as entertaining!

Hey, I know - how do you think I found eps from shows like Andromeda? My fandom knowledge is not that extensive :-).

I didn't really focus on a lot of the very obscure shows in the Wiki list, though; I should check them out and see if any come before 1992.

Well, the story list says J.G. Ballard's 1956 story is the first known version.

But that's not TV. I wasn't crediting TNG with inventing the trope - just potentially putting it on TV first :-).

In case anyone is unaware, the summary is actually a quote from BSG - which is a bit misleading, because BSG is not in the vid, but I found it too perfect to resist.

And BSG lifted that line from Peter Pan...

I know! I discovered that when I was googling to find the exact quote from BSG - but I used the BSG phrasing (which is slightly different from Peter Pan's) to keep it in the "fandom family," as it were :-).
