BTW - the correct way to fly a flag at 'half-mast' is to run it to the top of the pole, then bring it down by one flag's-breadth. Of course, on a ship, this is about half the length of the Jack staff - hence it looks as if it's flying at 'half-mast'. Or at least, that's the correct way to do it in the UK. Not that many seem to know it these days.
