Handed in my final assignment of the year this afternoon. I think I was incredibly restrained in my reflective essay about my stage management experience this semester. Found out via conversation with a mutual friend afterwards that even one of my actors was concerned with the lack of "respect" shown to me. Which means that all hope is not lost ( Read more... )

have you ever considered doing your fight director's certificate?

check out http://www.safdi.org.au/Home/Home.html or have a chat to nigel or scotty witt.

then everything you do will be legal. :o)

I'm more worried that I'm enrolled in a course which doesn't teach its students even the basics of stage fighting. It's not as if there's a plethora of plays out there that are all about hugging ...

in all honesty...if the fight lecturer dealie was doing it wrong, perhaps it should be pointed out that if continued along that path it was likely that injury would occur and as a responsible stage manager with fight experience it would have been negligent on your part if you did not step in.

if you were also informed of the requirement for the lecturer to oversee the fight choreo as well then perhaps a joint collaboration could have been done in that you educate the lecturer in the skills that they already should be aware of and have them pass it on to the actors...that way the safety aspect is covered and if they bugger it up and injure themselves it's all covered legitimately.

either way...there shouldn't be any punishment i would figure since no one was injured and the performance went off without a hitch (i presume) so whilst there's nothing for them to come down like a tonne of bricks about, there is now knowledge that in future communication needs to be increased so that all parties know what is supposed to happen etc.

It's not that what she had done was wrong, it was that she hadn't done anything because the directors had never told her there was a fight that needed choreographing. I've seen stuff that she's done, she knows what she's doing with fights, I was just never told that she was supposed to do it, and my directors were fuckwits with a habit of skipping lectures. I definitely agree, though, that the Tech lecturer might have benefited from mentioning to his stage management students the fight thing, just in case. It's not as if even third year students are known for their overwhelming intelligence or wish to play by the rules.

In hindsight, once I'd heard that she was supposed to have done it I should have tried to find her or emailed her to be sure, but with less than a week to go before the two shows my logical thinking brain had run away.
