That's one of the problems with being in Cozumel on an island when everything people tend to like to see are on the mainland via Playa del Carmen.

I really like Playa del Carmen, we even did a day trip from Cancun. There is a local coach bus you can take for about $4. brand new buses so not to bad for the hour and a half drive.

I didn't manage to get out to Tulum when I was staying in Cancun but did get out to Chichen Itza even though the tour we took I didn't feel it was long enough at the site.

Would you say Tulum was worth it for sure though?

I would say that it was most definitely worth it, though you can't climb through the ruins anymore at Tulum. And if you go by yourself or with a tour that allows you the time, I hear the climb down to the beach to swim is well worth it. It's just so beautiful there. . .the water just a beautiful turquoise color. . .I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
