for lo, the rebel spheres spin round

The room around him was empty, sunlight falling through the windows and catching all the bits of dust.

Tsuzuki was turning old memos into paper airplanes instead of finishing his half of the Sasebo case. He'd gotten all the way to the young mothers, long dead, their low keening moans hidden inside waves breaking on bloodstained rocks, aching and lonely like the cry of circling gulls -- and after that it just got depressing.

Hisoka's lunches were getting longer lately. Tsuzuki decided it was a good sign. Maybe Hisoka was learning that nobody much cared as long as you didn't blow up anything important -- well, Tatsumi cared, sometimes. But Tatsumi didn't pick on Hisoka, counting up every late minute and wrongly filled-out form.

He threw a plane made from last week's budget across the room and watched it slide a stop, disturbing the cherry petals scattered across the floor -- but it wasn't as much fun with nobody on the other side of the desk.

Hisoka could ignore something so actively it was more satisfying than most people's attention.
