It’s great that John can use that memory to find what he wants with Sherlock. The experience was possibly not all a bad thing - especially as it leads to all this.

You are very right -- John might possibly never have crossed that line with Sherlock Holmes if Maxim hadn't been pushing things in a direction that made John understand Sherlock, and ultimately himself, more clearly. And perhaps the same goes for Sherlock -- Maxim was pushing Sherlock rather hard at the start of this story to take things to the next level, and it made Sherlock realise that what he really wanted to do was wait for the chance that it could be John.
They are strongest together, and now Sherlock is reassured of their bond. John is a very good teacher in certain areas.<3
