Sounds like Counting Blue Cars by r l mclachlan, one of the saddest fics of all time. There's a scene like that towards the end.

Sad, but beautiful. One of a very short list of death/death-like fics that I will read.

Then again, I'll read anything that RC wrote for QAF. She's phenomenal.
