Except for the part in which Brian pitches in, it sounds like chapter 11 of "Broken Image" by Susan K. James & NJPax, but I know I've read another one in which Justin lets Brian put the star/angel on top of the tree since he's never been able to do it when he was a kid, it's just a matter of finding it again.
