I just started this last night but at least for the first six chapters, Cynthia is a big part of the story as Brian's close friend:

Cynthia continues to have a large part through this story, and into the sequel, "Ardor" which is a work in progress.

Warning though, in case you do read, B/J do not exactly meet in this part of the series, it's more of a prologue to their story which really begins in Ardor.

Yup, I warn about that in the summary. The sequel is called "Ardor" but you sort of really have to read NMMA completely before you read Ardor. Or, I think I might've summarized NMMA in the first post of Ardor if not.
