Quick n' Stupid Lineart Coloring Tutorialesque Thing (Photoshoop)

CFUD has far, far better colorists than I, but this is a little Photoshop trick I've always liked, so I'll share it with the class:

Okay. Open your lineart and throw it on a new layer, as shown (I'm usually lazy and just duplicate the layer and clear out the old one, leaving whitespace).

Now that you've done that, click on the "Channels" tab. Now click on the empty dotted circle on the bottom ("load channel as selection")

Lookie what we've done! We've selected all the whitespace! Hit the delete button and clear all that away.

Turning off the background layer's visibility here just to show you that yes, now all you have on this layer are the lines. You may find that you've thinned out the lines a little when you cleared out the white, but don't worry it'll come back.

Now click on the Layers tab again and under "Lock" hit the little checkerboard box. Now the transparent space can't be altered.

Which means you can pick up your brush tool and color the lines aaannyyy waaaayyy you want without having to worry about...staying inside the lines!

So, you can go ahead and throw your color layers on beneath the outline as normal and just color. Notice how I went into the lineart layer and colored Zidane's vest, and also colored the shading on his collar in a light grey, etc.

Any questions?

protips!
