The outfit on the guy in panel two is copied pretty blatantly from one of the heralds in A Knight's Tale, which I recall watching at this point in order to get into a 'tournament' sort of headspace. I love that movie. Of course, I love a lot of stupid movies, including but not limited to Howard the Duck, The Giant Claw, and the Adam West Batman movie ("pass me down the shark-repellant bat spray!").
The joke here is an old formula, but still made me laugh.
