Until I must destroy something I believe more important to leave intact than to preserve my own existence, I'd reach for enough power to overcome those who would destroy me. One might call such a thing the basest of instincts.

Depending on the person, survival is an ambition in itself. We are not bound to a code we blindly follow regarding whose needs are placed above our own, and to consciously put something before yourself, or yourself before someone, are what elevate us beyond the levels of simple instinct.
