It appears I'm developing an electronics itch that I need to scratch in a few ways.

Now here's the thing: I've spent decades tinkering with software, including some that's quite low level. I've played a cameo rôle a couple of times in semiconductor design. I know my way around a circuit diagram.

Have a look at the pages for PiTubeDirect and John Kortink's TubeSilencer, both of which believe the 5V coming off the Tube will blow a Pi to kingdom come. (PiTubeDirect's pages even include his schematic for how he did it). Both have sufficiently detailed photos to tell what level shifters they use. Indeed, it would appear that the need to change line levels is the only reason why a Pi can't be plugged directly into the Tube - I believe level shifting is the sole role of the interfaces.
Similarly, the various MMC card projects hooked up to the user port all required something in between to shift voltage levels, at least until they discovered an SD card interface with them built-in.

Percieved wisdom would appear to be that retro is 5V, modern is 3.3V, and something needs to be between them or it'll end in tears.

I believe Makespace has at least some of those things, definitely cheap components, a reflow oven I'm not sure about, I know it got discussed. Plenty of people there do PCB stuff.
