Well...it's a little late now, but for future reference, female cats usually go into heat right about 5-6 month old. And they can be fixed at about 4-5 months. The way we decide if they're old enough is we look at their teeth, and if their adult canines are coming in (so it makes it look like they've got four fangs on top), it's time to make an appointment!
Is there a way to keep Riko seperated from the females? If the girls are old enough to go into heat, he's old enough to...you know...make use of that >.>
Yea my roommate and I both thought it would be around 7 or 8 months but we were totally wrong lol. I googled it last night and read that some female cats can go into heat as early as 4 months! If I had known that I would have gotten Riko fixed a longggg time ago.
There's not really any way to keep them seperated. The house is pretty small and we're gone most of the time. And it is kind of too late at this point.
There is an agency here that helps low income families with the nuetering of pets (Thank you boa_fanatica for the link!). I'm going to submit an application to them and give them a call Monday. I'm still going to get Riko fixed at the regular vet because its only $50 but the two girls are too expensive for both me and my roommate at this point in time. Hopefully this agency be willing to do it for cheaper than a vet would. If worst comes to worst though and both cats DO get pregnant and we're unable to get them fixed we'll just do our best to try and find homes for the kittens. I would never ever throw an animal on the street.
