That's the journalistic equivalent of an easy layup or... a white man's dunk? :)

How about:
Since virtually all sports involve variable conditions, comparing performances from one era to the next is technically imperfect.

and just leave it at that, without going to the lazy-journalists-bag-o-stereotypes (tm).

Doesn't the fact that one guy scored really high actually mean the other guy in the match was sorta crappy?

The general point though, across all modern sporting endeavors, is that modern athletes train in ways that their grandfathers didn't, and therefore the overall level of competition is intensifying as time goes on. But it's possible to make that point without the rest of the whatever.
