As for the length... I'm very bad at writing long stories. The longer it is, the more shallow (and/or boring) it gets. Nonetheless, I try to make my stories longer but I can't say it works everytime. (I've been thinking of maybe writing more to this, but don't count on that...)
I think that Lady Gloria had severed the ties between her and her son, partly because Dorian is so promiscuous. IMHO she is very much like Klaus in that matter. Now that there is a man who is implying that Dorian would finally settle down, Lady Gloria can't help but give her blessing. She is happy to find most of her children happy. Even though she has not seen one of them in years.
Asking for a marriage permission must be Klaus's own motivation. He is very old-fashioned like that. ^^
