Guinan had felt when it happened. She hadn't been sure what it was, only that something was wrong, something was different. But no one seemed to alarmed, and she went about her day, only to discover later that her feelings had been correct, when the rumors trickled in - Doctor McCoy was gone. Even stranger, someone with his face and name was currently being interrogated.

As much as she wondered about their new guest, there was someone who she was more worried about. Packing a few snacks into her bag, she set off for the bridge. Once there, the helmsmen pointed at Kirk's ready room, and she stood outside, letting the chime announce her.

He had forced himself to work by the time the chime rang, gathering preliminary reports from Engineering and from Science. There was nothing new as yet, and his orders were short and succinct. Jim knew his crew was doing everything they could to figure out what had happened and how to fix it, but he asked for updates as soon as there was a breakthrough, regardless of the time of day.

Keeping busy would keep him from thinking too much, he reasoned. Which is why Jim was methodically working his way through his inbox and didn't look up at once, just called out to open the door. "Enter."

She could tell that he was losing himself in his work, a trait that Starfleet seemed to cultivate on their young captains. But that really was the last thing the man needed to do right now, and Guinan would bet her last credit that the captain hadn't eaten anything today.

"Hello," she said, holding her bag in front of her. "Can I come in?"

He couldn't quite muster a smile, but Jim nodded at Guinan, his lips quirking upward a little. "Of course," he told her, aware that by now, the entire ship had probably heard the news. Jim pushed back from his desk and rose, gesturing her toward one of the more comfortable chairs. "What can I do for you?"

Part of him suspected that she was here to check up on him. Somehow, Jim didn't mind as much as he might with almost anyone else, but as he settled into one of the armchairs he was a little wary, all the same. He was aware that there wasn't much keeping him together, and he didn't know whether he was ready to start examining himself too closely yet, part of him worried that if he let the gnawing anxiety and fear in the pit of his stomach take hold it would be impossible to contain.
