Ran across this doing research and figured others might be interested. 1st Reconnaissance Battalion Command Chronology (1 Jan 2003 to 30 Jun 2003). It's basically the after action done by Godfather's replacement and covering the invasion. Interesting stuff about what worked, what didn't, etc.

Indeed! Tech geek-outs are completely justified for a useful tool (rather than yet another toy).

OMG thank you for sharing! This is my new fic writing bible!

So, if I read this right, we now have a name for the Capt. who was 'Raptor'. That would be Rideout, it looks like.

Damn Whitmer drags Nate into Recon then gets himself assigned to Operations where he can be of no help.

And look! We know they all got leave from 13 June to 30 June! Yay!

This helps with certain details it's sometimes hard to go back and scour the books for when I've forgotten something.

You are very welcome! It is very helpful in terms of know what worked/didn't and also knowing the names (or at least acronyms) for the equipment. And the little pissy comments here and there are just fun.

No, Raptor was Gilmer. Rideout replaced Gilmer on May 1st (which is why there are two people listed for Company Commander, C Company). Amusingly, both named Brian.

Whitmer drags Nate into Recon then gets himself assigned to Operations where he can be of no help.

Heh. Well, he was a little help, refusing Encino Man's order to drop danger-close artie on his guys and all.

We know they all got leave from 13 June to 30 June! Yay!

Indeed. And, btw, at least. They well could've had longer, but this document only goes through 30 June.

Freakin' dates. And I think Brian and Brad are very much 'names of a generation'.

Serous question: did Whitmer intervene directly? Or did he just have a well-trained group of guys manning the radios who knew how to read maps and understood correct protocols?

My modern canon knowledge is stuffed in a backpack somewhere in the back of my brain. My warbigbang is set in 1967, so I have transferred the entire GK universe to 1967. It's been necessary to dump quite a lot of the modern universe and infuse it with late '60's society and structure, which is why I probably seem dumber than usual in my comments.

They well could've had longer, but this document only goes through 30 June. Individuals also accumulate personal leave time, much like vacation ( ... )

Yeah, it was Whitmer who took Encino Man's call and refused the strike. From Fick's book:

"I later found out that Major Whitmer was on the other end of the radio, and he was even angrier than I was. He threw the handset down in disgust, screaming about 'that fucking idiot,' whom the battalion staff secretly called 'Shitman'"(229).

...it's probably not a GOOD thing that I remember this type of inane detail.

have you come across much lately with regard to Recon as it is TODAY? Even if by accident? There was an article on marines.mil last week that confused me and I wonder if the entire program is about to cease to exist in its current incarnation.Do you mean in the post-2005 reorganization where they created MARSOC and put it under U.S. Special Operations Command (because now there ARE "special Marines")? It gets a bit confusing, but as I understand it ( ... )

I'm sorta spamming you. Oops.

7. Armor plate for turret HA!

Good God, this is - where was this two years ago? Although it's not like I don't have seven WIPs, so it's still totally useful. And, wow, do I ever want to know what you're writing, if you're digging this deep.

Sorry about the delay! But totally useful, right? Right. LOVE. GOD I love research. It's so inspiring. Anyway.

wow, do I ever want to know what you're writing, if you're digging this deep.

What, people don't do massive amounts of research just for your everyday story? I assumed that was the default setting!

...sadly, I can't even remember how this one came about. I was looking into something? And it just appeared. But hey, works for me!

What, people don't do massive amounts of research just for your everyday story? I assumed that was the default setting! It's my default setting, too, but I tend to assume that's just me being weird and OCD. Like, if Nate has a class at Harvard, I'll check to see what building it might be in. I probably won't use it, but I'll know.

Ironically, my current job is research and I hatehatehate it. So I'll do it for fun, but if people are paying me to do it, then apparently it's the bane of my existence. Because that's logical, I know.

What building it'd be in is totally legit! I stopped myself from looking into San Diego real estate. Because that I really didn't need to get into.

And see, the research they have to pay you to do? Generally WAY less fun. So I can understand that.
