So my aging (5-6 years old) home computer has always had trouble downloading its XP updates. I was sloppy about fixing it - I'd have to go clear out a directory (never could remember which one) and then hope the windows update would work. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didn't. Yee-HAW!! Good on you, boyo. I'm in the process of getting mine back up and running again, too. Some of the stuff you talked about has a lot to do with why I won't touch IE unless I absolutely have to, and even then I try to make it as short as possible. Firefox is definitely my preference for stuff.

OpenOffice is also a decent set of apps for stuff like letters and spreadsheets and all. Nice thing about it is it's also free.

Rootkit scanners? Hmm, sounds interesting. Got any suggestions for either type or where to learn about 'em? After the mess I had with the first reload of XP, I'm open to any suggestions for stuff to bump up teh home security (something along the lines of the .45 by the bed and the 12-gauge in the closet works for me).
