The trailer for the movie which alleges to be The Dark Is Rising is out. I watched it, so as to prepare myself for seeing the trailer on the big screen before Harry Potter. It only cemented my intention of never, ever seeing the thing.

For me, the books were formative and are beloved enough that this travesty crosses the line from "hilariously awful" into "actively painful." Your mileage may vary, of course. (The sad thing is that it looks like would be a mediocre but not terrible movie if they'd only made it an original one, instead of trying to "update a boring classic.")

Anyway. In antidote, for myself and for any of you that want it, I provide icons. I will probably make more, because I like this sort, but these are what I have so far. (I was going to wait till I had a better set, but, well, antidote.) The terms I set myself were to make icons using text from the books, and images that did not show the characters. (Humans in silhouette I allowed, or in the far distance, or that kind of thing, but no faces in focus.)

I did use a line from "All Along The Watchtower" for the last two, because I couldn't resist. Other than that, they're all from one or another of Susan Cooper's books, or from works quoted therein. (Once in a while they're paraphrased, either because I didn't have the book to hand or because it fit better that way.)

Standard procedure: credit is appreciated, commenting is not necessary but makes me happy, if you want to modify them go right ahead but it's nice if you either give part-credit or show me what you did. Oh, and if you have any other suggestions of lines to use, or requests? I'll take 'em! Icon-making is fun.

Edit: And here I went and forgot my own credits section. Oops! The bases for "light from the Lost Land shall return" and "a new Logres" were made by jiatra; the base for "two Riders were approaching" was made by feathered; and the base for "walk the Old Ways" was made by one of the folks over at obsessiveicons, but I can't remember which one. The other bases were made by me from stock images from Getty, Jupiter, and the like.

general geekery, icons, books: dark is rising
