Lovely portrait of adult Xander; the tension between him and Angel was particularly good, and his response to the news was powerful and moving.

I'm really glad you liked it; I worked especially hard on getting the Xander/Angel dynamics right. Chapter one can stand on its own as a story, since that's how it was originally planned; but I hope you like the other chapters, too!

I figure every 2-3 days should do it -- I know how overwhelming it can be to try to read all the fanfic out there, so I don't want to throw it out there too quickly.

Great piece. I'd been putting off reading until it was done, so, yay. It's done.

Too bad Giles was out of town, because Xander surely would have told him to do something. Maybe hang toward the back and avoid danger, or research the history of ceiling tiles.
Nah. Giles would enjoy the researching too much.

Awesome. I love Xander's pleasure at being in charge, and being good at it, and even better, his anger that his control and coolness is sucked away in a second by Angel's arrival.

It took a moment more for Xander to catch his breath. “She’s on some heavenly Rodeo Drive. Shopping.”
Angel nodded. “New shoes. A purse.”

Nice.

It was easy for me to get inside Xander's head here, because he's so much like me. He spent much of his life downtrodden, bullied, and generally convinced he was good for nothing, using humor as his only defense. I think no one was more surprised than him to discover that there was something he actually excelled at, so he's positively giddy at the idea of tackling this remodeling project. Poor Xander has always needed just such a self-confidence boost! Then along comes Angel ...
