Plot bunnies

I was walking my dog this morning and was attacked by a plot bunny, but it begs a question:

Which is worse:
1) Going for a dream and failing out
2) never going for the dream in the first place

Ie: which of those would make a character angst more?

Never going for it. If you fail, you did it; you can move on, because it's over. (That's not to say it won't haunt you, but not in the same way.)

Never going for it, never even trying, means you can spend all your time wondering what if in increasingly depression-inducing ways.

Okay, so basically? I want to write a fic where one of the main characters is physically broken (he went to Iraq and got a large section of his leg blown off when his car went over a landmine) but he's dealing with it, understands how it's affecting his life, etc. He isn't *happy* but he's working his way towards that. And the other works for his dad's company, because his dad is getting up in years and can't do it on his own. The thing is? The second character had moved to NY, was trying to live his dream (had been for 8 years) and was failing miserably. MISERABLY. Not at the dream, but at being successful and healthy on his own. And he knows it, but he's done a really good job of hiding it, so when his dad asks him to come home, he's like, "sure" because on the surface it's about helping his father, even if both of them know its because he can't keep going on like he is ( ... )
