This makes me so upset. Having grown up and lived in countries where going to the doctor for routine services (including emergencies) you never need to worry about getting a bill in the mail, it just baffles me that "shining city on the hill", "leader of the free world" etc still can't get it sorted out

Yeah, its absolutely a nod at white privilege not to want to answer the race question... I just think it is an extraordinarily strange question to ask on an application *itself*. Like... collect that info at the first interview or something.. or at the hiring process... but just for the application?

Wr had so many bills and questions like this after child # 1 was born. What DID our insurance pay for?! Why was the hospital pediatrician not just paid by the hospital and bill us instead? What is this other bill? Wait ... why sre we getting things three months later? Why are you handing a bill to a lady that just gave birth the night before?
15 years ago, my friend was in Turkey, on an archeological dig on Cypress as a college student when she fell seriously ill with a flu. She couldn't stop throwing up, couldn't leave the bathroom for three days. Her friends are trying to convince her to go to the hospital and she's like, "No! I'll feel better, I don't have the money and I just can't... so it's fine.." and she just expected to get better

We pay for first class capitolism! Lining all the pockets that are already overstuffed.
We currently qualify on the state Medicaid and you know what? I would PAY for this insurance. The difference between birth # 3 and the first two was huge! People worry about having government subsidized medicine stifling innovation, but honestly, if you simply allowed people to "buy in" to the state system (which I believe some states do on a tiered system based on income) and have a public option alongside the commercial insurance might just help rein in the constantly increasing costs. Maybe, just maybe.
In short: other places have better ways of doing this and don't bankrupt their populace on medical bills!
